Congratulations to Daniel "The Golden Child" Jacobs, and his entire team, for last week's eighth round knockout victory over fellow New Yorker, and hardened ring veteran, George Walton. With boss Oscar De La Hoya at ringside, the brightest prospect in the Golden Boy stable showed exactly why by displaying a dizzying combination of speed and power that left the outgunned Walton questioning why he challenged Jacobs in the first place, and perhaps, why he returned to boxing at all.
The win increases Jacobs' professional record to 17-0, with 15 wins by knockout, and positions him nicely for a late summer showdown on HBO. While it hasn't been officially confirmed by Jacobs' camp or HBO, rumors had circulated prior to Jacobs' fight against Walton that the Golden Child was being lined up for an August fight with former Contender star Peter Manfredo.
The fight would mark Jacobs' first non-PPV appearance on HBO, and certainly the toughest fight of his young career.
Manfredo, who has fought primarily at Super Middleweight, and has been in the ring against former world title holders Joe Calzaghe, Jeff Lacy and Sergio Mora, has exactly the resume and most importantly, the household name, that a fighter at this stage of Jacobs career covets. A fight between Jacobs and Manfredo on HBO, if promoted properly, could make Jacobs a household name. A victory could accelerate Jacobs towards title contention. Several sources have identified August 22nd as the most logical date for the fight, with Jacobs and Manfredo filling the third slot on a potential HBO tripleheader from Houston, Texas featuring Juan Diaz versus Paulie Malignaggi and Robert Guerrero versus Malcolm Klassen.
HBO or not, Manfredo or any one of the middleweight contenders blocking Jacobs ascent up the middleweight ladder, one thing is clear, Daniel Jacobs' path to the top appears to be golden.
